Perfect Period Lights

Look what I found! Believe it or not I even got them on sale. This Calhoun Glass Sconce is on sale at Pottery Barn right now. They are the perfect book ends for my new mahogany front doors. The globe shape is the perfect 1960's look but this is a more updated style. Don't forget the specialty bulbs!

Exterior Update: Paint

Above is a photo of the house's paint history the red looks like it was the original color, Sort of a barn color. The blue on top of it was the color of the house before it was primed (which isn't bad, but it's not good either). For this house I think the paint color should be dark and bold with just a touch of color.

Benjamin Moore makes a line of historical colors, these are safe and pretty much idiot proof. I am not suggesting any color in the historical family will work on the outside of a house, such as the time my dad painted the entire back of our house in Stuart gold (not a good look). But these colors are a good starting point.
Grey with a touch of green.
If you want the name of this perfect paint color send me a money order for 50 bucks and I'll sent it to you. (that means you mom)

Doors Doors Doors

Here are the interior doors we selected yesterday. I'm a fan of the solid core door myself. I think this is a good modern alternative to the flat 1960's ranch door. White with some oil rubbed bronze hardware....perfect. I have to tell you my dad made me look at every single option before I got to pick this door out. Then left me to have awkward conversation with the sales guy for an extended period of time. ah bonding.

Exterior Update

So I realize that this does not look like an improvement Although you can see where we added lights to the roof line that will shine down on the house ..my idea (they are not all on)..... The boards have replaced the old windows and changed the location of the door (which I did twice!) whoops! The exterior color right now is just primer. The single door is now changed to a double door which we selected last night. I made Pike (Dad) carry in the 10 gallon bucket of paint (not without a small fight) so I could make sure the mahogany exterior doors looked right with the paint color. Makes sense right? Ya that's what I thought.
Here is a lame picture of the new exterior door below....at least you can see the color

Ugly Duckling

The face of the house has tons of potential. A few tweeks here and there will really modernize the front and bring the outside up to date. Remove shutters Replace windows open up doorway to a double door and remove garage door (which is no longer a garage) and install windows to make the front more symmetrical.

Fireplace

My first thought was to save money and paint the fake brick paneling on the fireplace and put a band aid on it for now......then I realized that that was a waste of time. To the touch this stuff just feels cheap. This is the only fireplace in the house and would really shine with a new tile face or even just drywalled with a new black box would be an improvement.

oh and the ceiling tiles will be going too! Really a drop ceiling?

Entry...very important!

The entry of the house leave allot to be desired. It sets the tone for the whole house.
Small closet, bad flooring and doorways are being removed and opened at this very second...
Just as I posted the picture above this one came over from my associate (Pike). As you can see the closet is gone and gives the room more natural light and room to give the space a new dinning area as well as a living room.

This side of the entry (living room) plays a major role on the exterior of the house. The windows seen above are old and need to be replaced. This will not only make the windows functional but will also change the face of the house and make it more modern.
Bye, bye blue carpet................and window for that matter.

Out with the old...............
